Parkinson’s Disease and LSVT

Rebecca is a certified LSVT BIG clinician.
LSVT BIG is an exercise programme designed for people with Parkinson’s Disease. It trains people with Parkinson disease (PD) to move their body more ‘normally’. People living with PD or other neurological conditions often move differently, with gestures and actions that become smaller and slower. They may have trouble with getting around, getting dressed and with other activities of daily living. LSVT BIG effectively trains improved movements for any activity, whether “small motor” tasks like buttoning a shirt or “large motor” tasks like getting up from a sofa/chair or maintaining balance while walking.
It is an intensive programme consisting of very frequent visits over a 4 week period with daily exercises and tasks to complete. It is an evidence-based programme which is customised to individual goals. It can be used at any stage of the disease but has most successful results in the early to mid stages.

I am so passionate about this programme and inspired by the improvements that can be seen.

Testimonial

I am 45 years old and was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease a year ago . My primary symptom is rigidity and reduced arm swing in the left side and I have no essential tremors. I am part of a global Parkinson community on Facebook where I learnt about LSVT BIG and its benefits . I live in London and found Rebecca through Google. Following an initial assessment, Rebecca tailored an LSVT programme for me addressing key mobility priorities for both major and fine motor functions. I have just concluded my course of LSVT BIG sessions.

I couldn’t be more grateful to Rebecca for setting me on the course of my essential physio ‘medication’ for 15 minutes a day. I’ve had a lot of physio over the past 2 years and what sets Rebecca apart is her focus on the individual, tailored approach and balanced process; focusing on both encouragement and maintaining discipline. She’s also very approachable and easy to work with - she travelled to London and delivered these sessions in yoga studios and also complemented these with online sessions. Rebecca was mindful to make each session incremental and not repetitive, so once I had the hang of the exercises she addressed other related aspects such as balance and fine motor skills. It’s early days, but more than the physical impact is the psychological satisfaction of taking my 15 minutes LSVT ‘medication’ everyday is invaluable- I’ve done a 4.5 mile walk on the golf course whilst playing full 18 holes and this week I have done 2 hikes of about 4 miles each in the Lake District.

Thanks Rebecca and I look forward to continuing our interactions and sessions .
